Dieser kleine Streber (macht immer alles aufeinmal (Wurzeln, Blätter und Blüte)) konnte nicht warten bis die Tage dauerhaft heller werden und öffnet hier gerade die erste Blüte des Jahres, erstaunlicherweise gut durchgefärbt.

This little teacher’s pet of an orchid (always doing everything at once, (growing roots, leaves and blossoms)) could not wait for the days to get more distinctly brighter, but really had to opene a test blossom now already. And surprisingly, the colours seem to be strong.

Das kleine Bäumchen hat nun eine Schale die zur Wurzelmasse passt, die Farbe beisst sich zwar mit den Blättern, aber das ist erstmal egal. Zunächst musst der Kleine erstmal zur Ruhe kommen und Kraft tanken.
Gut, dass ich noch alte Schalen bei meinen Eltern hatte.

The little tree has now a bowl that is fitting to is root volume. The colour is not so nice with the leaf-colour, but that does not matter for now. Now it is all about settling in and getting stronger.
Aaaand there is something happening already- new leaves, yay! And as you see on the last picture- there will be more- the sleeping eyes on the twig are opening up.

Deshalb schreibe ich auch gar nicht, sondern, um zwei neue Errungenschaften vorzustellen.
Ich habe einen neuen Spiegel, der ziemlich schwer zu fotografieren ist und deshalb „in Echt“ viel schöner aussieht:
Und dann habe ich heute mal meine neue Umkehr-Osmose-Anlage in Betrieb genommen (ein Wasserfilter, der hochrreines Wasser produziert, z.B. für empfindliche Aquarium-Tiere oder Pflanzen):
Die Anlage ist in der Tat genauso einfach in Betrieb zu nehmen wie die Beschreibung es vermuten läßt und alle Schläuche und Verbindungen sind dicht. Was nicht dicht ist, ist das Reduzierstück aus dem Baumarkt, das als Übergang zur Armatur dient. Auch unterschiedliche Dichtungsringe brachten keine Abhilfe, das Ding ist nicht dicht. Hmpf. Deshalb habe ich jetzt erstmal nur die Membran gespült um die Anlage in Betrieb zu nehmen und werde mich jetzt nochmal nach einem höherwertigen Reduzierstück umgucken.

It snooohooows… lalala..no, it is not my doing, it is snowing all by itself.
And that is not the reason for this post, anyway. I just wanted to show two things new to this household.
I have a new mirror, that is pretty hard to photograph and so it looks way better in person.
The other thing is my reverse osmosis filter (which produces very clean water, for example for sensitive fishes or plants). The filter was just as easy to set up as the instructions hinted at and all tubes are sealed- just the adapter that makes it possible to connect to the shower-faucet is leaking, rubber seals in there or no. Hmph. So today I finished after rinsing the membranes and will now have to look for another adapter of better quality.
Die neue Erde für den kleinen Baum ist heute schon angekommen, also wurde gleichmal ausgetopft und dann in die neue Erde wieder eingepflanzt.
The new soil for my mini tree has arrived, so I did uproot it immediately, to get it settled in good soil.
Das hier braucht man auf jeden Fall. (Natürlich gibts noch jede Menge Spezialwerkzeuge, die lohnen sich aber erst wenn, man mehr als einen Baum in Pflege hat)
This is what you need. (Of course there are lots of specialised tools, but they are only worth buying when you have more than one tree in your care)
Aquariumkies, Bonsai-Erdmischung, den Baum und eine Schale (entweder die alte wiederverwenden oder eine neue), Gartenschere/Seitenschneider, feine Stäbchen zum lockern der Erdrest an den Wurzeln.
Gravel for the fishtank or other fine grained gravel, bonsai soil, the tree and its bowl (either the old one again or a new one), sharp cutting instruments, little rods to loosen the soil clinging to the roots.
Egal was für eine Pflanze, ich topfe immer in einer Mülltüte aus- auf diese Weise kommt das alte und verbrauchte Erdreich/Substrat nicht in Kontakt mit dem neuen und eventuelle Krankheitserreger oder Schädlinge werden nicht gleich mit umgepflanzt.
No matter what kind of a plant, I always remove the plant from its pot inside a litter bag – like this I avoid transferring any contamination or possible vermin to the fresh substrate.
Mit dem Stäbchen wird nun sachte der Wurzelballen entwirrt und verbleibende Erde herausgestochert.
With the little rod, you gently prod remaining soil loose and untangle the roots.
Wie vermutet hat der Baum verglichen mit dem Erdvolumen kaum Wurzeln.
As suspected, the tree has not many roots compared to the mass of soil it was planted in.
Außerdem war er zu tief eingepflanzt.
And the tree was set too low into the pot.
Während der Baum von Erde befreit wurde, kam die Schale ins Spülmittelbad, denn ich werde sie wiederverwenden.
While the tree was freed from soil, the bowl was bathed in dishcleaner solution, because I intended to reuse it.
Die Abzugslöcher müssen mit einem Gitter abgedeckt werden- dafür eignet sich eine zerschnittene alte Fliegenklatsche sehr gut.
The venting holes need to be covered with a grate – you can use an old flyswatter and cut it up for this purpose.
Als nächstes kommt eine Schicht Kies in die Schale- das ist die Drainageschicht.
Next you fill in a layer of gravel- this is your drainage for the bowl.
Danach kommt etwas Erde an die Stelle an der der Baum stehen soll, der Baum wird daraufgesetzt und dann wird mit Erde aufgefüllt. Beim Einpflanzen sollte man bei eckigen Schalen an den goldenen Schnitt denken und den Baum nicht in die Mitte setzen, sondern ihn in einer der beiden Hälften platzieren.
Next you put some soil on the spot where you intend to have the tree, place it gently on top and fill in the open spaces with soil. When selecting the spot for the tree in an angular bowl, you should consider the golden ratio and avoid propping the tree right in the middle of the bowl.
Hier kann man die Struktur der Erde gut sehen und auch, dass der Baum vorher zu tief eingetopft war.

Jetzt noch ein Viertelstündchen in warmen Wasser baden, dann gut ablaufen lassen und fertig.
And now take a 15 minutes bath in warm water, let leak well after and done.
Ganz wichtig! Da beim Umpflanzen Wurzelschäden entstanden sind, darf man nun ca. 4 Wochen lang nicht düngen und der Baum sollte kein direktes Sonnenlicht erhalten.
Very important! Since the repotting caused damage to the roots, one should not use fertilizer for about four weeks and avoid direct sunlight on the plant for the same time.
Jetzt kann ich nur noch warten, der kleine Baum ist am Zug, er hat nun alle Voraussetzungen für ein gutes Wachstum.
Now I can just wait, now it is the tree’s turn, it has now all it needs for thriving.

Für dieses arme kleine Ding hieß es Mülltonne oder mitnehmen und es ist ja klar was man dann macht, oder? Klar man nimmts mit und gibt ihm eine Chance.
Und dann kam mir die Idee, dass das Bäumchen dann auch genauso gut eine Projekt-Pflanze werden könnte… immerhin kann man bei der Pflege ja auch noch was lernen, selbst falls es eingehen sollte. Und ganz vielleicht wird es ja auch eine Hilfe auf meinem immer noch nicht ganz abgeschriebenen Weg zum Outdoor Bonsai. Mehr über meine Gedanken zum Thema sind hier.
Also wurde das Bäumchen einer Erstbehandlung gegen eventuelle, unsichtbare Schädlinge unterzogen, ein kleines bißchen die Grundbedürfnisse recherchiert und ein erster kleiner Rückschnitt vorgenommen.
Letzteres, um totes Holz zu entfernen und auch ein bißchen in der Hoffnung den Austrieb anzuregen, nun da die Tage länger werden.
Danach sah er noch gerupfter aus, aber das wird schon noch. *g*
Danach erstmal in eine Umgebung mit leicht erhöhter Luftfeuchtigkeit zum erholen und in Ruhe lassen.
Was passiert als nächstes?
Neues Substrat ist schon auf dem Weg, da muss er dann nochmal durch. (Ähnlich wie bei Orchideen taugt das Baumarktzeug nichts, lieber beim Züchter bestellen, darum habe ich noch nichts hier) In diesem hier scheint ganz viel Lehm zu sein, damit komme ich Bewässerungstechnisch nicht klar.
Gewöhnung an Sonnenlicht – der Kleine stand unter Kunstlicht, soll aber spätestens ab Mai nach draußen- bis dahin muss er auch direkten Sonnenschein zeitweise verkraften können.

When the question is litterbox or take it home, what do you do? Yes, you take it home and give it a chance at least.
And then I had the idea to make it another plant project and maybe a step stone on the way toward probably having one day an outdoor bonsai. A huge dream of mine. You can read my thoughts on this here.
And so the little tree got a preventive treatment against possible and invisible infestations, I quickly read up on the basic needs of the species and gave it a little cut. Now this cut made it look even more sorry but was necessary to get rid of dead wood and to encourage the making of new leaves a little- the days are getting longer, this is the ideal moment for that.
And then I set it into a little protected environment with slightly raised humidity so it could recover from all the stress.
What happens next?
New substrate is on the way (just like with orchids, the stuff offered at the homeworker’s store is not sufficient, better buy from a bonsai gardener directly), so I will have to uproot him, but better that than killing him. In the present substrate is a lot of clay and i just know I can’t handle that.
Getting the plant used to sunlight- it will get an outdoor spot from May on (or earlier, if it gets warm enough) and then it will have to withstand some period of sunshine in the morning.
Ich war heute noch mit meinen Eltern essen, sozusagen das kombinierte Geburtstagsessen für Mamis und meinen Geburtstag und bekam noch etwas nachgereicht- da hatte Mami doch glatt eine Orchidee im Blumenladen gerettet.*g*

Bei der Gelegenheit fiel mir gerade auf, dass ich die Orchidee, die ich mir selbst zum Geburtstag geschenkt habe noch gar nicht vorgestellt habe. Sie ist schon eine Weile länger hier, denn ich hatte sie in der frostfreien Phase Ende Januar bestellt. Jetzt blüht sie nicht mehr, macht aber schon zwei kräftige Neutriebe. So hat sie geblüht als sie ankam:

Birthday Orchids
Today I was out for a restaurant visit with my parents, sort of the combined birthday lunch for Mum’s and my birthday. And on the way there I got yet another pressie- Mum had actually saved an orchid from the flowershop. (I am so proud, LOOL!)
It is a small Phalaenopsis as pictured above and I am reasonably certain that it is a Phalaenopsis I-Lan Green Pixie, because the size, habitus and flower pattern all match the specimens you find on the web.
Better pictures will follow provided we will get some sunshine.
And while I was at taking pictures, it occurred to me that I had forgotten to show off the orchid I gave myself for a birthday-pressie. It has been here for a while already, as it had to be shipped when there was no frost. When it arrived, it was in bloom as pictured above. Right now it makes two strong new shoots, so there will be new flowers in spring. It is called Blue Moon, but violett moon might be more fitting. *g*
…ich bin nur nicht dazu gekommen etwas zu schreiben.
Gestern habe ich von Mami zwei kreative Bildaufhänger bekommen- es sind dünne Metallseile an denen man mit starken Magneten Bilder oder Postkarten festmachen kann. Die habe ich natürlich gleichmal aufgehängt und habe nun angefangen, sie zu bestücken:
Und hier ist mein neuer kleiner Zimmerbrunnen in Betrieb (mit Ton hört man sogar ein bißchen vom Plätschern), die Standfläche für die Kugel muss zwar meiner Meinung nach noch etwas tiefer, aber das kriege ich auch noch zurecht gebastelt.

Yes, I am still alive, I just did not have time to post something.
Yesterday I got two creative wallhangers from my Mum. They are thin lines made of metal and you can stick postcards or photos to them with tiny but strong magnets. Of course I had to try it at once and am currently at finding or making myself purry images to hang on them.
The little vid shows my new little indoor-fountain at work.
Diese kleine Multihybride habe ich im April(?) letzten Jahres auf dem Wochenmarkt(!) gefunden.
Sie sprach mich wegen der runden Blüten an und zu Hause habe ich gemerkt, dass sie ganz stark nach Zitrone duftet. Leider machte sie bald danach den Versuch zu Grunde zu gehen. Alle Wurzeln, bis auf die eine die außerhalb des Topfes gewachsen war, gammelten innerhalb einer Woche weg.
Ich wollte aber unbedingt, dass sie überlebt, also wanderte der traurige Rest in die Tüte. (Eintrag, der die Tütenmethode beschreibt )
Dort stellten sich nach einer Weile zögerlich kleinste Erfolge ein.
Bald danach zog sie von der Tüte auf ein Töpfchen mit Substrat um, was die verbleibende Wurzel veranlasste, neue Seitentrieb zumachen und auch an der Planze selber kamen weitere Wurzelstümmelchen zum Vorschein. Und jetzt macht sie ein neues Blatt:
Das kurze, dunkle Blatt ist das, was in der Tüte gewachsen ist.
Das neue Blatt nochmal etwas vergrößert.
Es scheint langsam aufwärts zu gehen. 🙂
English Summary:
Last April, I found the yellow Multihybrid above on the market. I took it home because if the cute rounded shape of its flowers and soon found out that it was fragrant, too, smelling heavenly of lemon.
Unfortunately, it made an attempt to die very soon after, loosing all roots in a single week. All? No, one was left, it had been growing outside of the pot and turned into a real lifeline for this plant. The orchid went into the plastic bag (Description of rescue method here ) where after a while it became obvious that it still wanted to live. Some root-stubs showed and a tiny new leaf, even.
Soon after those expression of growth, I moved the orchid onto (not into yet!) a tiny pot with substrate and kept spraying it daily (only on the roots). The remaining root and the newly growing stubs were prompted to grow and the orchid was finally potted, still in the very mini pot. It is still in there and now it makes a new leaf again. (The short dark leaf is th one it made in the bag)
Here is hoping that the improvement continues as steadily as it does so far. 🙂
Heute habe ich bei meinem Zug durch die Gemeinde nicht nur die Dinge gefunden, die ich brauchte, sondern auch noch ein paar schöne Sachen dazu.
Weil ja im Moment überall das Weihnachts/Winter-Sortiment weggeräumt wird, kann man ein paar super Schnäppchen machen, wenn man genau hinschaut. Diese schönen neuen Teelicht-Halter/ Kerzenhalter habe ich super günstig bei Rossmann aufgetan:

Und einige meiner Orchideen wurden heute in geeignetere, bzw. größere Töpfe umgesetzt. So auch meine größte Phalaenopsis, die nun einen 15cm Topf bezogen hat:
Mit dem größeren Topf ist diese Pflanze jetzt auch ein Fall fürs Baden im Eimer- hier im 4L Eimer (da sieht man die Größe auch noch mal):

Today I made some neat findings when I was out and about to buy some supplies I needed. Those candle-holders pictured above were found at Rossmann for a huge discount. Everywhere, shops are removing winter/christmas articles and give big discounts on them, so one can really get lucky.
My Phal. Mashimo opens her second bud now and the blossom already looks as good as the older one.
Some orchids were moved into more suitable/bigger pots today, too and as an example here my largest (by leaf-span) Phal, who now lives in a 15cm pot. The huge pot makes her a candidate for taking her baths in the bucket from now on. Pictured with a standard 4L bucket above, which also helps to determine the size of the plant.
(The little glas vases make the pot more heavy and keep it from floating in the bucket)

My Dendrobium keikis have moved all together into a better manageable pot now- their new home for the next years. They are nine months potted now and looking still perky.
Proudly showing off the shoots that my orchids of the cooler places have going. All the books say that there is slower growth during the winter due reduced light and such. Well, I can’t say that we have sunshine everyday here and still they are happily growing. Very pleased with that! Here is hoping for some flowers in spring.
I am also glad that the Nelly Isler has recovered so well, it looks very healthy now, it must like my kitchen.

Taadaa, the flower is done, it just has to straighten itself out a little.
