Uuaahh, es regnet Riesenspinnen?! o.O
Neee…weder riesig noch fällt sie vom Himmel. Eine junge Kreuzspinne hat ein ziemlich großes Netz an meiner Hortensie befestigt.
Und wenn man genau hinguckt, hat das Netz hinter ihr eine Laufmasche! *g*
Und überhaupt ist das ziemlich schlampig gesponnen- nicht das ich das besser könnte, aber die perfekte Symmetrie die man Spinnennetzen immer zuschreibt hat dieses nicht. Spinnen sind eben auch nur Menschen. *g* Ziemlich ironisch, allerdings, ich kann ja selber auch keine geraden Linien handarbeiten – natürlich kriege ich dann auch die passende Spinne.

Uuaahh, it’s raining giant spiders?! o.O
Nope, a young European garden spider (called „Kreuzspinne“ in German for its more or less obvious „cross“ pattern on the back) has attached quite the net to my hydrangea. If you look closely, you can see a webbing flaw right behind her. And where is that often called upon perfect symmetry of the spiderweb? Not here, definitely… Spiders are only human, too, it seems. And very fitting in an ironic sort of way- I can’t manage a straight line sewing or knitting either, so it is most consequent that I get a spider that is bad at weaving, too. LOL!! -
Die Neutriebe der Dendro Nobile Hybride wachsen wie verrückt, als ich die Pflanze bekam, konnte man nur den größeren als kleines grünes Etwas erahnen.
The new shoots of the Dendro Noblie hybrid grow like heck- when I got the plant, one could only see a hint of green of the bigger one.
Phalaenopsis bellina bastelt fleissig an der zweiten Knospe und der alte Blütentrieb darüber zeigt nun wieder Wachstum.
Phalaenopsis bellina is busily working on the second bud and the old spike above is beginning to show growth activity again.
Die von den Spinnmilben betroffenen Pflanzen scheinen sich gut erholt zu haben, sie sehen jedenfalls ziemlich gesund aus. Hier mal stellvertretend ein paar.
Those plants affected by the spider mites seem to have recovered from this very well, as they look pretty healthy, as you can see on the following examples.
So sieht so ein Schaden übrigens an einer Pflanze mit dunklem Laub aus:

Diese hier ließ anfangs ganz schön die Blätter hängen, aber hat sich nun super erholt- und wie man sieht war das Wurzel-Wachstum nie betroffen. *g*
This one was pretty droopy when treatment started, but also recovered well- and the growth of the roots was never affected.

Meine beiden wurzellosen Phalaenopsis wollen beide noch leben und zeigen das mehr oder weninger deutlich. 🙂
Diese hier ist sehr eigenwillig, sie macht erstmal ein neues Blatt, den Ansatz dazu bemerkte ich vor ca. einem Monat, da sah es so aus:
Und so heute- von Wurzeln noch immer keine Spur, aber das Blatt wächst kräftig:
Die Andere hat etwas länger gebraucht, dafür ist sie aber „standardkonform“ *g* und macht ein neues Blatt und neue Wurzeln.
Beide werden jeweils in einer durchsichtigen Plastiktüte gehalten, in die ich vorher einen Sprühstoß Wasser aus der Blumenspritze gebe. Die Tüte wird dann mit einer Klemme verschlossen. Alle zwei Tage kommen die Pflanzen für eine Nacht aus der Tüte, einmal im Monat sprühe ich Wasser mit Dünger unter die Blätter und lasse die Pflanzen ohne Tüte abtrocknen. Die Tüten-Phals stehen hell, bei Zimmertemperatur, aber sie bekommen keine Sonne ab. Ich achte darauf, dass die Pflanzen in der Tüte auf der Seite liegen- so kann herabtropfendes Wasser nicht im Herz der Pflanze stehenbleiben.
English Summary:
Above you see my two rootless Phalaenopsis and the current state they are in after continuous intensive care. The first plant is a bit perculiar as it makes such a nice new leaf but shows no intent of growing the sorely needed new roots. Plant two luckily behaves as expected and there are new roots in the making and as a nice extra, also a new leaf. I am very happy to see their efforts.
Both are kept in a transparent plastic bag, each. Before the plants are set into the bags, I spray a little water in there, then close the bag tight with the help of a clip. Every two days the plants get to spend an entire night outside their bags to get the chance to dry (and to avoid mould). The bags sit in the window so they get a lot of light, but they are protected from direct sunlight. Once a month, I spray water with fertilizer in it onto the undersides of the leaves and let the plants dry after that before returning them to their moist bags. When in the bag, I take care that the plants lie on their sides, because like this, no dripping water can end up in the heart of the plant and cause rot. -

…nee bei mir geht keine Orchidee ins Kloster. *g*
Stattdessen hatte ich die glorreiche Idee meine mimosenhafte Miltoniopsis einfach vor die Tür zusetzen – denn da ist es kühl und es gibt einen Tag-Nacht-Unterschied. Wenn hier die nächste Hitzeperiode anfängt nehme ich sie vorübergehend wieder rein, denn ich denke bei 30C oder mehr fällt sie tot um. Aber bis dahin ist es draußen sicher netter für sie.
Das Netz soll übrigens keine Viecher abwehren (ist ja eh behandelt und potentiell tödlich für alles was krabbelt), sondern der Morgensonne etwas die Kraft nehmen. Ansonsten ist der Standort ja unverändert, nur auf der anderen Seite des Fensters.*g*
„Miss Milton“ takes the veil.
Naw, no orchid heading for the monastry here, LOL!! I just got the idea to simply put out my obviously suffering Miltoniopsis, because it is cool out there and there is a true change between day and night- probably she needs that to recover. As soon as we fall prey to the next heat-period, I will take her back in, though, because no way that plant lasts more than 30C. But until then she might like it better outdoors.
The „veil“ is not for fending off creepy crawlies, but for lessening the power of the morning sun, so that the plant will hopefully stand this. Apart from that, the spot the plant is in has not changed vastly- it is just on the other side of the window now. -
Meine Lieferung mit dem Mittel gegen Spinnmilben und andere kleine Monster kam heute schon an und ich bin natürlich gleich zur Packstation, um das Päckchen zu holen. Die beiden Dosen haben gerade so gereicht, da hatte ich gut geschätzt. Für die Nachbehandlungen muss ich dann noch mal neu bestellen.
Den Tag habe ich damit verbracht sämtliche Pflanzen zu waschen und sofern verträglich einzusprühen. Bei den Orchideen hat es nur das linke Fenster erwischt, so wie es scheint. Da ich auch den Ausgangspunkt für die „Epidemie“ gefunden habe, ist das auch kein Wunder. Das Efeu und der Elefantenfuß hatten sich in Spinnmilben-City verwandelt. Das ist definitiv das letzte Mal, das ich in der Bauhausfiliale irgendwas kaufe was lebt…
Efeu und Elefantenfuß sind nun entsorgt und die Orchideen behandelt. Ich hoffe das Mittel schlägt schnell an.
Ich habe die Pflanzen komplett besprüht, auch auf die Gefahr hin, das sie nun die Blüten abwerfen, aber eine schnell geheilte Pflanze ist mir wichtiger als Blüten, die kommen schon wieder.
Von all den befallenen Pflanzen hat sich meine Phal. bellina am tapfersten geschlagen- auf der turnten zwar hungrige Spinnmilben rum, aber dank der wachsartigen Oberfläche hatten die offenbar nicht viel Glück beim Anbohren. Ich wills hoffen, denn sie öffnet gerade die erste Blüte und macht eine zweite Knospe.
Vielleicht sollte ich meine Hybriden alle verschenken und nur noch bellina Variationen sammeln *g*, nee, mach ich nicht, aber das ist wirklich meine zäheste Pflanze- ganz entgegen meiner Befürchtungen.
Jetzt sind alle wieder an ihrem Platz bei 25C und 63% Luftfeuchtigkeit, das ist sozusagen ideal und ich hoffe es hilft bei der Heilung.My delivery with the anti-spider-mite treatment already arrived today, whee! Further examination resulted in a slight relief, because apparently only the left window with the Phals has been affected. Investigation turned up why – the elephant’s foot and the ivy had sneakily turned into Spider-Mite-City, spreading the suckers on the wind of the fan most likely. This was definitely the last time that I buy a plant in that branch of Bauhaus!
On the picture above, you see the orchids standing in the shower after treatment. (The ones unaffected so far have been treated, too, no risks!) I have coated the whole plants with the spray, as I prefer plants getting healthy again soon, if that means they throw off the blossoms, so be it. They can make new ones.
Of all my affected plants, my Phal. bellina proved most tough- hungry mites were walking around on it, but apparently they had not been very successful with getting at the sap so far- must be the wax-like surface of the plant. I hope it will not mind the treatment of today much, as it just opens its first blossom and is making a second one.
Maybe I should give all those sissy hybrids away and collect only variations of Phal. bellina, LOL!! Naw, I won’t, but this one is a real tough plant, proving all my initial worries wrong when I bought it.
Now they are all back in their place, with an ideal temperature of 25C and air humidity of 63% – I hope this helps them overcome this trouble fast. -

Heute habe ich an meinen Orchideen Spinnmilben gefunden und leider sind alle betroffen, weil sie recht eng stehen. Die Viecher sind vermutlich von draußen reingeweht worden, auf dem Balkon gibts jedenfalls auch welche.
Was ist zu tun?
1) Informationen über Spinnmilben sammeln, wenn kein Fachbuch zur Hand ist zum Beispiel hier: Orchideen Doktor oder im Orchideen-Forum in der Rubrik „Krankheiten und Schädlinge“: Orchideen Forum
Im Forum findet man dort (als angemeldeter Nutzer) auch Tabellen mit Wirkstoffen und den Hinweisen wogegen sie wirken.2) Zügig das entsprechende Mittel kaufen oder bestellen (alternativ gibt es Leute, die mit Raubmilben gute Erfolge erzielt haben). Falls Orchideen behandelt werden unbedingt darauf achten, das der Hersteller eine Pflanzen-Verträglichkeit angibt und das das Mittel ölfrei ist.
3) Das Mittel nach Packungsangaben anwenden, mehrmalige Wiederholungsanwendung nicht vergessen. JEDE Pflanze im Raum mitbehandeln.
4) Fensterbank etc. waschen und evt. Desinfektionsmittel ausbringen.
Was kann ich als erste Hilfe tun bis ich das Schädlingsbekämpfungsmittel habe?
- Gespinste mit Spüliwasser wegwaschen, Blätter ebenso von unten und oben „sauber-wischen“
- Besonders stark betroffene Stellen am Blatt mit Neem-Öl Produkten einsprühen (Achtung nicht das ganze Blatt, damit es noch atmen kann) – diese Rückstände müssen vor Einsatz eines Spritzmittels vorsichtig wieder abgewaschen werden.
- Nach dem Berühren der Pflanzen die Hände gründlich waschen, damit eine Übertragung auf andere Pflanzen verhindert wird.
- Den Pflanzen helfen, in dem man die Kulturbedingungen optimiert, z.B. die Luftfeuchtigkeit bei Bedarf anhebt.
Hier ist meine spontane Intensiv-Station *g*:
Zur Vorbeugung, bzw. frühzeitiger Entdeckung eines Befalls alle Pflanzen regelmäßig genau anschauen, ganz besonders wenn plötzlich das Wachstum stoppt oder Knospen nicht größer werden und eintrocknen.

Today I found spidermites in the orchids- unfortunately all of them have some, because they stand close together. I suppose they came floating in from outdoors, as I have seen some on the balcony, too.
What to do?
1) Gather information about spider mites, so you know what they do and how they live. That is essential to set a strategy against them.
spider mites2) Buy an appropriate aracicide and make sure it is suitable for orchids (no oil in it). If you want to try it the biological way, you can attempt to bring out mites that feed on spider mites.
Whatever method you chose, don’t wait too long with getting your defence ready, the plants deteriorate fast.3) Treat the plants according to the package. Treat EVERY plant in the room. Don’t forget to repeat the treatment at least twice.
4) Clean the windowsill etc. meticulously before putting the plants back.
First Aid until you can get your hands onto the aracicide:
- Wash off the „cobwebs“ with a water-dish-cleaner-solution. You can treat the leaves on both sides.
- Use neem-oil on the worst spots, but do not coat the whole leaf, it needs some space where it can still breathe. Do not forget to wash the neem off again before treating with the aracicide.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after handling the sick plants to avoid spreading the little pests to so far unaffected plants.
- Help the plants by checking and optimizing their surroundings. For example, take measures to raise the air humidity if it is too low in extended heat periods.
Seen above is my make up intensive care unit that helps raising the humidity.
How can you prevent this happening? Not at all, but by looking closely over each plant regularly, you can at least catch the little suckers in an early state. Be especially wary if growth stops or buds look dry and crippled.

Nachdem ich in den letzten Tage gefühlte tausend Tauchvideos auf youtube gesehen habe, um in Unterwasser-Stimmung zukommen, habe ich angefangen den Wasserdrachen von Schleich zubemalen. Das ganze ist ein Experiment, da die Farben (bis auf das Gold) Lacke für Porzellan-Malerei sind, aber so wie es aussieht, vertragen die sich sowohl mit dem Gummi als auch mit dem Lack darüber. *puh!*
Ganz wie echte nasse Schuppen ist das Farbschimmern beinahe unmöglich zu fotografieren, weil sich die Farbe je nach Lichteinfall ständig ändert. Die Bilder geben ansatzweise wieder, was das Auge sieht, aber in Person ist der Drache zehnmal schöner.
Hier folgt schonmal eine kleine Vorschau auf das Stückchen, was ich testweise bemalt habe, da muss ich aber auch noch an den Übergängen arbeiten.
After watching tons of dive vids on youtube those past days, I felt reasonably tuned to the necessary underwater-mood and began painting on the Schleich water-dragon. It’s an experiment, because the paint I am using is originally for glazing on porcellain. So far, it has set on the dragon and under the laquer I used to fixate it, though, so I hope I get away with that. It’s that special quality of those types of paint that look just right on such a piece. On the images above I tried to capture the inprogress work. Taking those pictures turned out harder than I thought, because just like with real wet scales, the paint is permanently changing with the angle of light hitting them.

Beinahe ein Jahr nach ihrem Einzug blühen zwei meiner allerersten Orchideen wieder.

Die Dipladenia ist wirklich fröhlich am wachsen. Als das Spaliergitter neu war, sah der Fortschritt nach einer Woche so aus:

The dipladenia is a real fast grower- the first piccie above with the climbing help was one week after I installed it. And the one below another week later. -
Jetzt sind wirklich so gut wie alle Blüten offen – und die riechen ganz intensiv nach Honig! Lecker. *g*
